Alamo Area BSA Shooting Sports

The goal of the Alamo Council Shooting Sports Comittee is to provide a safe quality opportunity to introduce our youth to the shooting sports and the variety of opportunities for growth related to shooting sports.
Shooting Sports Are One Of The Safest Of All Sports, Due To The Safety Rules And Training Of Coaches And Athletes.  Did you know that:

• Boy Scouts Are One Of The Sources For Future Olympians
• There Are Many Opportunities For Scouts interested in competition including the Olympics And
   National Teams
• Shooting is a Fun And Recreational Sport
• Shooting Differs From Other Sports Because Size, Speed And Sex Do Not Determine Success
• Shooting Is A True Lifelong Sport
• Shooting Improves Academic Performance
• Shooting Teaches Competitors A Variety Of Life Skills And Lessons

Current BSA policy requires Both a Certified Instructor AND Range Safety Officer be present at shooting activities. Note that RSOs are not instructors and cannot be Merit Badge Counselors.
The Shooting Committee does not have a formal resposibility to train Instructors and RSOs but does try to offer NRA Instructor and RSO training several times per year when volunteers are available to support the effort.
Pistol Shooting has been added as a sport for Boy Scouts but no Merit Badge has been established at the time of this publication.
