Pearls of Wisdom

"No. Try not. Do, or do not.  There is no try." ~ YODA, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Parents, Volunteers, and Scouts of all ages,

I hope everyone has settled into the 2015 Scouting year with a positive outlook for advancements and adventure for all the youth we serve.  Recently, I have been honored to meet some great Scouts that showcase the Values of the Scouting movement: from a confident Eagle Scout, Robert M. spontaneously leading hundreds of Scouts from across Texas sing "America the Beautiful" in the rotunda of the State Capitol during the report to the state in Austin, to witnessing 40 Cub Scouts from our Project Aguila Outreach program open up our Bexar County Friends of Scouting Breakfast with smiles and patriotic pride while waving America's flag, it drives my purpose to not just "try" but to do Scouting well.

I've sat across the chair from an eleven-year-old Boy Scout Danny E., while he shared his story of sacrificing himself to push up his five-year-old brother so he could breathe and not drown in the Guadalupe River (YouTube linkExternal Link of interview).

I was also touched by the story of another Eagle Scout named Ricardo Noel N. sharing his passion about why he proudly accomplished his Eagle Scout service project that won him an award that he will not waste.  He wants to set the bar high for his fellow Scouts and wants to be an example to others in his community (YouTube linkExternal Link of interview).  There are many more stories like these of courage and confidence coming from our Scout youth and Scouters that I've run into just in the last couple of months whether at District Banquets, Roundtables, or other Scouting events.

Here is a message that I recently received from Danny's mom, Mandy, after he was recognized with the Life Saving Award at our Bexar County Friends of Scouting Breakfast on February 19 in front of 300 community leaders.

"I just wanted to take a moment for allowing us to be a part of today's event.  Danny kept telling me he felt "famous."  I know it meant a lot to him.  Thanks for all the effort that was put into this.... I am very proud of Danny and all his accomplishments.  I know Troop 228 is proud of him as well." ~ Mandy E.

The theme I want to share in writing to you is one of "action" like our recent Scouting for Food 2015 Drive benefiting SA Food Bank (YouTube link External Linkof interview).  They all "do" something to move us forward.  So it must be with us adults that support this Scouting movement. Let us all take the lead from our youth that sometimes show more courage than many of us.  There is no "Try", let us "Do" Scouting well.  Our Scouts and those yet to join depend on it.

Yours in Scouting,

Michael de los Santos, Scout Executive
