Bird Walk and Count at McGimsey Scout Park

As part of Alamo Area council’s Adventures For A Second Century Program, outdoor education facilities, including McGimsey Scout Park in Castle Hills and Mays Family Scout Ranch on Medina River in south Bexar County, stand as great sites for future conservationists to learn about all manner of bird species in their midst. Birding is a perfect Family Scouting Outdoor Adventure…..just a couple of hours at a time!

Birding experts from San Antonio Audubon Society (SAAS) will be staging regularly scheduled quarterly bird counts/FamilyBirding Walks for scouting youth and their families. SAAS members will also serve as youth education program counselors at periodic birding seminars and a Bird Study merit badge course, held each December vacation period during the council’s Winter Extravaganza.

The schedule of these bird counts/walks for 2019 is as follows:

Saturday, February 16th-8:00-10:00AM-McGimsey Scout Park

Saturday, May 18th-8:00-10:00AM-McGimsey Scout Park

Saturday, August 17th-8:00-10:00AM-McGimsey Scout Park

Saturday, November 16th-8:00-10:00AM-McGimsey Scout Park

Youth members must be accompanied by adults. Families may register online through a link above. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for seasonal weather conditions, wear comfortable shoes, bring personal water bottles, and binoculars, if you have them, and birding books. A limited supply of binoculars will be available for family use during the counts/hikes.
