Fall Wood Badge II

Why Should YOU Attend Wood Badge?

There are many reasons to attend Wood Badge, but one of the most important is the impact you, as a trained leader, can have on your scout and the scouts in your unit. Recent studies have shown that units with trained adults have better retention rates (more kids stay in Scouting) and in troops, they do more high adventure activities.  In a three-year project funded by the John Templeton Foundation a Tufts University team found the following as it relates to character attributes:

  • Obedience:Scouts started lower than their non-scout peers, but over the three years increased 3.5X while the non-scouts declined
  • Helpfulness:Again, scouts started lower than their non-scout peers and increased 4X while the non-scouts declined almost 3X
  • Kindness:Though Scouts started just slightly higher than the non-scouts, over the three years they improved nearly 4X.The non-scouts stayed almost constant during the same time period.

Also, Scouts who stayed in the program five years or more:

  • Graduated from high school 91% versus 87% of non-scouts
  • Graduated from college 35% vs 19% of non-scouts
  • Earned about $20,000 more annually
  • Attended religious services 87% vs 77% of non-scouts
  • Believed helping others should come before one’s own self-interest 92% vs 83%

Now, after all that, I hope you strongly consider attending Wood Badge so you can provide a quality program to your scout.  Wood Badge consists of two weekends 5-7 Oct (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and 26-28 Oct, and yes, you have to attend both weekends.

You register by clicking on the orange button on the right of this page.  You’ll need to put down a deposit of at least $115 towards the total cost of $225.  If you register now you can make installment payments through the middle of September.  If you can’t attend this Fall then add it to your schedule for next Spring (March/April).
