Canoe Challenge Adds Kayaks to Support Scout, Venturing, and Exploring Youth Outdoor Adventures

Join the Boy Scouts of America, Paseo del Rio Association, and San Antonio River Authority on Saturday, August 6th from 7-11 am for a race down the San Antonio River. The Ford Canoe and Kayak Challenge includes a Scouting competition encouraging outdoor adventure. Sponsored by Ford, the challenge is also open to the public, corporations, and celebrity teams with special pricing for the Scouting community.

Approximately half of the participants (71 of 151 registered two-person teams in 2013) competed in the Scouting division; winning numerous awards for Scouts by gender and age in addition to race categories for Scout Leaders!  The race has been around over 40 years, drawing Scouts all the way from Minnesota. One year, a family, representing Boy Scout Troop 17 in Hibbing, Minnesota, made time during a family vacation to compete in the event.

“That's really what the event is about, the Scouts,” Paseo del Rio Association spokeswoman, Rachael Garza said. Ironically as a young Girl Scout, she actually did this very same race; back in the days when it started at Josephine Street and ended at Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant. Today this area is an enclosed veranda.

This year additional outdoor adventure activities are planned to be incorporated into the event, including 2 stations where Boy Scouts can earn partial credit towards the canoeing and kayaking merit badges.

F.A.Q.'s - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Are the Youth broken into age categories as in prior years: 11-13, 14-17, and adults?

A. YES as far as not only age categories but also gender for the Youth
categories.  Adults is by gender (male, female and mixed). In the event that 1 team member in a canoe is older (or an adult).....they should be (I change them) to the older appropriate category.

Q. What does this event cost?  I see a blurred line between participants and vessels given the introduction of single person kayaks.

A. $15 per person per team (without regard to a 1-person kayak or a 2-person canoe team) to simplify things.......each time you race in whatever type of watercraft, division/category or team size - it is a flat $15 per person per team.

Q. Does the cost change depending on if a participant brings their own kayak or team-up with a buddy and borrow a canoe?

A. No. Canoes may be provided by participants or the event. Kayaks must be provided on your own.
