McGimsey Eclipse Viewing

AUG: Solar Eclipse Viewing at McGimsey Scout Park

The McGimsey Scout Park will be open to all Scouts and Units for viewing of the Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21. Scouts are welcome to view the Eclipse from the area around the lake. The park will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Solar Eclipse will begin at 11:40 a.m. in the San Antonio area and end at 2:48 p.m. The maximum eclipse, while only partial in San Antonio, will be at 1:09 p.m.

BSA Eclipse Patch

The BSA has produced an Eclipse patch. The Patch is available to all Scouts who complete the necessary requirements. The linked article includes these requirements and links to NASA for safety and viewing tips: Scouting Magazine Solar Eclipse ArticleExternal Link.

Patches WILL NOT be provided at this event. The Eclipse Patch must be pre-ordered and pre-paid through the Musselman Scout Shop by 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017.

Viewing Safety

Solar Eclipses provide opportunities to view rare astronomical events but should be viewed with caution. Looking directly at the sun will cause damage to the eyes of the viewer. Please carefully observe Solar Eclipse Viewing Safety GuidelinesExternal Link.

McGimsey Scout Park Viewing

The McGimsey Scout Park will be open for viewing the Eclipse; no additional programming will be provided and BSA Solar Eclipse patches will not be provided or available for purchase. Parents/Unit Leaders are responsible for their Scouts and any programming they wish to offer.

Water will be provided at the Dining Hall Patio; Scouts should bring a personal cup. Restroom facilities will be available, as well: Scouts/youth will utilize restrooms in the Pool House and adults will utilize restrooms in the Dining Hall.

All Scouts, families, or units will need to check in at the McGimsey House upon arrival. Parking will be available in the field across from the Cub Country Tee Pees. Parking for vehicles with approved handicap placards or plates will be available at the Pool and Sport Courts lots.
