Jamboree on the Air

Radio Scouting Comes to Bear Creek

Amateur Radio, or Ham Radio as it is often called, has long been a part of Scouting. The Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) event that occurs every October remains the largest annual event in Scouting and is truly an International event. There is, of course, the Radio merit badge, created in 1923, that is available and its popularity has gone up over the last several years with between 6,000 and 7,000 merit badges earned annually over the last 8 years. Requirements for the Radio merit badge can be reviewed at Link

We are proud to announce that a real amateur radio station is planned for Bear Creek to be operational by the summer of 2018. The station will consist of 40’- 50’ tower and a small multiband beam with a rotor on top of the tower and wire antennas for other bands and will operate under the call sign KX5BSA. We are in the process of equipping the station which we are confident can be done through donations or loans of equipment.

However we will need some help in staffing the 2018 summer camp. The Radio Merit badge is one that can be completely earned during the week of summer camp which can usually be accomplished in two classroom sessions and an on-the-air session. So if you are an amateur radio operator and would like to participate next summer please email Mike Crownover Jr., whose amateur radio call sign is AB5EB, at [Click for member's page], for more information.

The station will also be available year around after completion and may be used during campouts if there are amateur radio operators present at the time of operation and advance permission is obtained. The station is sure to become a popular fixture at Bear Creek will add to the versatility of activities available to Scouts and Scouters.
