District Realignment Naming

Scout Youth to Name Newly Realigned Districts

Dear Scouting Family,
As you may have read on our website that the Alamo Area Council is in the exciting position of realigning our district boundaries in order to better serve our Scouting communities. The new district alignment will be based on school district boundaries and will take effect on January 2, 2019. The new plan calls for 6 geographic districts plus 3 special purpose ‘meta-districts’
The temporary descriptive names for these districts are as follows:
1 – Central District – most of the area in downtown San Antonio inside of loop 410
2 – Northwest District – most of the area to the north and west of San Antonio including Boerne, Kerrville, Medina, Hondo and the surrounding areas
3 – Southeast District – most of the area to the east and south of San Antonio including generally Bexar county outside loop 410 from about 90/151 around to IH10 as well as Wilson, Karnes, Atascosa, Frio, La Salle and McMullin counties
4 – NEISD/AH District – Alamo Heights and Northeast Independent School District (Castle Hills, Windcrest, Hill Country Village, Hollywood Park, Northern Hills, Stone Oak, etc.)
5 – NISD – Northside Independent School District (Shavano Park, La Cantera, UTSA, Helotes, Leon Valley, Alamo Ranch, etc.)
6 – Comal/Guadalupe District – Comal County, Guadalupe County and the parts of Bexar County served by Comal and Judson ISDs as well as Randolph AFB and Schertz Cibolo (includes New Braunfels, Schertz, Cibolo, Seguin, Spring Branch, Bulverde, north Stone Oak)
m1 – ScoutReach – meta district contains all of the council’s urban outreach (ScoutReach) and Project Aguila units
m2 – Exploring – meta district contains all of the council’s Explorer Posts
m3 – LDS – meta district contains all of the council’s LDS units for the duration of their charters with the BSA (ends 12/31/2019)
As you can see, these district names are not very manageable like the current names (Victory, Memorial, Rough Rider etc.)
That’s why we are asking for YOUR (actually your Scout’s) help in naming these new districts.
We are asking for our youth members to make suggestions via our survey at Link.
Ideas might be to base them on their geographic arrangement, local cultural references, BSA references, or whatever you can think of. Extra consideration will be given to name sets that are cohesive with each other.
The survey will close at 12:01AM on November 16, 2018. After that time, a special judging committee, made up of the youth leadership of our council will meet to review the survey responses. The best 3 sets will be put out via our social media channels in November for votes by our membership to be completed by December 15, 2018. The winning selection will be announced that following week.
The Scouts who submit the final three selections will each be awarded a $50 Scout Shop gift card. The submitter of the winning entry will receive a second $50 gift card and recognition at the council’s January Executive board meeting.
Thank you all for your support of local Scouting and for helping us get the word out about this contest to our Scouts.
