JAN - Council Now Accepting Applications for NYLT Summer Courses Staff

  

Selecting qualified staff is vital to the success of every National Youth Leadership Training course. We seek potential staff members who possess enthusiasm, reliability, and a strong dedication to Scouting. 

Minimum requirements for youth staff members include:

  • Be at least age 14 
  • Have held positions of leadership in their home unit 
  • Have been an NYLT course participant
  • Must be committed to attend all of the development and orientation events for staff (see the right side of this page) 
  • Must apply using the provided application

Job Descriptions:

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL): Prepared to fulfill the duties of the SPL if she or he is unavailable at some point during a course.  One ASPL will take responsibility for program matters; another will accept responsibility for service. 

Duties of the ASPL for program are: 

  • Provide mentoring and coaching to each day's program patrol
  • Oversee campfire preparation 
  • Support the NYLT presenters by preparing for sessions, meetings, and activities
  • Oversee audiovisual support for NYLT sessions
  • Model the core learning and leadership messages of the NYLT syllabus
  • Complete other assignments as determined by the SPL

Duties of the ASPL for service are:

  • Provide mentoring and coaching for each day's service patrol
  • Oversee preparation of the model campsite on the Orientation Trail (Day One of the NYLT Course)
  • Conduct daily campsite inspections
  • Guide patrols to comply with the Daily Campsite Inspection Checklist
  • Teach the daily service patrols to police the area
  • Clean up troop areas with a Leave No Trace ethic
  • Manage the daily campsite inspection recognitions
  • Complete other assignments as determined by the SPL
  • Recruit youth participants

Troop Guides: The role of a troop guide is similar to that of the troop guide in a regular Scout troop. In addition, NYLT troop guides are essential in facilitating the NYLT syllabus and advancing each patrol's development. 

Duties are:

  • Serve the patrol to which he or she is assigned
  • Coach and mentor each day's patrol leader
  • Present selected sessions and activities of the NYLT course
  • Model the core learning and leadership messages of the NYLT syllabus
  • Complete other assignments as determined by the SPL
  • Recruit youth participants
  • Be well-versed on all core content sessions

Quartermaster: Responsible for storing, maintaining, and making available all the physical things necessary to present the course. This includes the program and service supplies. Also responsible for procurement and delivery of all food and drink stock. 

  • Maintain all physical buildings and equipment used by NYLT
  • Coordinate to distribute food stocks to the teams on a daily basis
  • Work with the Head QM for session and development meals
  • Check out and in the NYLT equipment
