26 Eagles Share 2017 Service Project Stories

Eagle Scout Recognition Luncheon at Mays

By Daniel Hernandez for the AlamoAreaBSA: May 16, 2018

The San Antonio League of Scouting Alumni, better known as “SALSA” hosted their second annual Eagle Recognition luncheon this past Saturday morning, at the Mays Family Scout Ranch, to honor the Eagle scout class of 2017.

The Scouts were being honored and recognized for earning their Eagle ranking back in 2017. This ranking is the highest advancement in scouting and a performance-based achievement for those whose standards have been met and well maintain, in areas of leadership, service, and outdoor skills, over the years. Only about 2.5 percent of all Boy Scouts earn this notable ranking. The Eagle rank carries a special significance, not just in Scouting but also in higher education, the work force, and the community.

Before the luncheon and the huge line for barbeque had begun, all the class Scouts stood up, came to the front, and formed a line. Standing side by side from one another with their Eagle badge shining proudly, they passed a microphone down the line. Eagle Scout Aaron Nicolf from Cibolo 323 was very genuine on how he earned his badge." My Eagle Scout project was building 20 footstools for nursing mothers at Metropolitan Methodist Health Center." It was emotionally moving to hear the fulfillment & passion as each individual Scout introduced themselves along with a reflection of their hard work and commitment.

KSAT12 Meteorologist, Mike Osterhage, who is also a fellow Eagle Scout, was the guest host and speaker for the luncheon. Caught by surprise in the middle of the ceremony, the Scouting Alumni awarded Mike with the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award (NOESA). NOESA is an award that was created to recognize notable Eagle Scouts who have either performed distinguished service on a local, state or regional level.

The Alumni also recognized Lieutenant General Jeffery S. Buchanan and awarded him with the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award as well, also catching the Lieutenant by surprise, just moments after giving such a compelling speech about two individuals overcoming challenges that happen to be Eagle Scouts. He said, they were not famous but he considered them to be heroes.

This was truly a rememberable ceremony and a historic moment, not just for Eagle class of 2017 or the Alamo Area Council but for the Boy Scouts of America and all Eagle Scouts across the nation. As these two formerly active Eagle Scouts were awarded for staying true to their duties and all requirements. This not only sets a great example for this year’s Eagle class or the next but for all future Eagle classes. Also in hopes of challenging all Scouts to pursuit in their footsteps that will someday lead them in receiving the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award themselves. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see who gets awarded at next year’s luncheon.
