Boy Scouts Sell First CAMP CARDS of the 2015 Season

Boy Scouts kick off third year of discount card spring fundraiser that supports Outdoor Adventures

by Angel Martinez for the Alamo Area BSA: February 28, 2015

The Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council, launched their third year of a discount card fundraiser called Camp Cards on Friday, February 27, 2015.  The Camp Card is an award-winning program that has proven successful in many Boy Scout Councils nationwide. The Camp Card sale is a risk-free way for Scout Units and youth to earn their way to summer camp, high adventure outings, or other activities.  Each Camp Card will sell for only $5 to the general public and will have multiple food, service, and entertainment discounts for the customer to use and reuse throughout the year.  Each participating Scout Unit will keep 50% commission of the sales total for each Camp Card sold.

“I hand them the card and ask everyone I see ‘Hello, would you like to buy a Camp Card to help me go to camp?’ and eventually most people tell me yes!” explained 11-year-old Dylan Sizer, who sold 444 Camp Cards in 2014.

To kick off this year’s sale, top selling Boy Scouts Dylan Sizer and Cody Trejo sold the first Camp Cards of the season to Kristen Wheaton from the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas.

“Like camping and outdoor adventure, selling a product like the Camp Card prepares our youth to face the world with a heart of service, commitment, and leadership to find success.  Please support our youth by purchasing a Camp Card for yourself and another as a gift so that we can keep the campfire alive for all youth for many years to come,” says Michael de los Santos, Scout Executive for the Alamo Area Council, BSA, based in San Antonio, Texas.

Look for Scouts selling Camp Cards at local businesses and within neighborhoods in San Antonio and the 12 surrounding counties served by the Council.  Camp Cards may also be purchased at either of the Council Offices to benefit under-served youth in the Scoutreach program.  The sale will last for ten weeks until Friday, May 8.

The Alamo Area Council Scouts sold over 80,000 Camp Cards in 2014 generating over $200,000 to help them participate in outdoor adventures to Prepare them for Life.  Community support this year will hopefully help sell 120,000 cards and generate $300,000 for the Scout Units and another $285,000 for Council operations.

“The Alamo Area Council is grateful for our community Camp Card Vendor Partners, including Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Corner Store, Burger King, Carl’s Jr., Express Lube, Lennys Subs, Pizza Hut, and Popeye’s for the opportunity to work together in serving youth in our community.  The success of our Camp Card sale will support more youth enjoying sports, fitness, and outdoor adventures,” says Angel Martinez, Communications / Marketing Director with the local Boy Scouts.
