McGimsey Climbing Tower Repaired To Support Future Adventures

Scout Youth and Scouters Save the Day - THANK YOU!

by Lynn Johnson for the Alamo Area BSA: April 21, 2018

I would like to thank the following Scout youth and Scouters who came out on a beautiful Saturday, April 14, 2018, to repair the McGimsey Climbing Tower:

Venture Scouts - Gage Weston, Emma Pruitt, Sean Pruitt, and Daniel Castillo

Scouters- Scott Morris, Karen Castillo, John Williams, John Fuentes, Ben McEwen, Craig Kinsey, Lester Ogawa, Hugh Harline, Sam Harline, and Steve Johnson.

They were able to repair the equipment storage area damaged by vandals and replace about 30% of the boards lining the vertical face of the wall, allowing more routes to be set giving instructors the ability to challenge climbers of all ability levels.

"The Alamo Area Council is proud of all our Scouting volunteers and leaders, like Climbing Committee Chair, Lynn Johnson, and her team of committed Climbing supporters," said Angel Martinez, PR Director for the Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council,

"With people like Lynn and her passionate volunteers, our Scouting movement is able to deliver on the promise of outdoor adventure and leadership skills for all our youth," continued Martinez.

Over 351 Eagles Scouts in 2017 accomplished over 57,000 service hours into our community. Additionally, another 18,000 youth in the Alamo Area Council provided tens of thousands of hours of GOOD TURN DAILY community service.

Training

We offer an adult Climbing Instructor course that includes both Tower training at McGimsey Scout Park and Real Rock training at Bear Creek Scout Camp.  Individuals who satisfactorily demonstrate the skills necessary to be an instructor after completing the training will receive a Level I or Level II instructor card. The Climbing Instructor Course is offered twice a year.  Courses usually begin in March and September.  Check the council training calendar for the next available course. Youth 16 and older can attend this training. To join the Alamo Area Council Climbing Instructor team, check out our next Instructor training beginning on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

Climbing Opportunities

We offer two Open Climb opportunities at the Climbing Tower at McGimsey Scout Park per year, one in the spring and one in the fall.  Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts can attend either a morning or afternoon session at the tower and try out climbing for a nominal fee.  This is a great way for a scout who has never climbed to try this great sport.  Pre-registration is required for this event.  Please check the Council calendar for dates and registration information.

If your troop, crew, or unit would like to learn more about how they can experience climbing, email visit www.AlamoAreaBSA.org/Climbing or email the Climbing committee at Climbing@AlamoAreaBSA.org
