Friends of Scouting Kicks Off Annual Campaign

Local Support Essential to Alamo Area Council

by Michael Brough for the Alamo Area BSA: February 19, 2015

A top-flight Scouting program doesn’t happen by accident.  It requires hard work, committed volunteers, earnest Scouts – and money to pay for facilities, training, local staff, insurance, and other needs.

The Friends of Scouting program helps to provide for these local requirements. The program, which celebrated a Valero-sponsored kick-off breakfast this morning, encourages donations from those who believe in scouting’s goals and want to support it locally. Friends of Scouting sponsorships, available at $200, $500, and $1000 levels, directly fund our Scouts’ week-to-week activities.

Over 70 percent of the Alamo Area Council’s nearly $4.5 million budget is self-generated or comes from direct funding, such as Friends of Scouting.  Although some Scouting families may believe they already pay for Scouting through their dues, that isn’t the whole truth, since dues don’t cover local costs.  Through Friends of Scouting, local supporters and Scouting families can directly help the Alamo Area Council.  The program also provides a much-needed shot in the arm to troops that aren’t as financially flexible as others, ensuring boys can take advantage of first-rate Scouting experiences no matter where they live.

Alamo Area Council Venturing Committee Chair Jim Lynch says, “I look at what my money can do, and how it can improve the world in the future. This world would be a better place if more kids got outdoors and learned to become better citizens. That’s what Scouting does, and why I support it through Friends of Scouting.”
