Hurricane Harvey Relief Ideas and Resources

Ways to Help Houstonians and others affected by the storm

by Angel Martinez for the Alamo Area BSA: 8/28/2017

Our thoughts and prayers are with the many families in and outside of Scouting that have been affected by the historic flooding in South Central Texas. The councils that have been significantly impacted include Sam Houston Area CouncilExternal Link (Houston), Three Rivers CouncilExternal Link (Beaumont), Bay Area CouncilExternal Link (Galveston), and South Texas CouncilExternal Link (Corpus Christi), as well as some counties within the Alamo Area (San Antonio) and Capitol AreaExternal Link (Austin) councils.

The National Boy Scouts of America is working with the leadership teams of these local councils to make sure their staffs and families are safe. We are also getting input on property damage at council offices and camps. As the storms continue in the area, we will continuously evaluate the needs of our people and facilities.

Thank you to those who have asked for ways to assist in helping the Scouting family. Given the extent of response efforts required, we understand it is important for first responders to focus on the most pressing emergencies without a well-intended influx of volunteers. As such, the best way to help in the near-term is to support relief efforts financially.

In keeping with the Scout Oath's call to help other people at all times, we have compiled this list of ways those of us in Scouting can help with relief efforts from Hurricane Harvey.

Please note that few, if any, relief agencies have a safe way for untrained individuals (let alone youth) to take part in relief operations first-hand. These agencies are most in need of financial donations and not material goods.
We will continue to update this list as we learn of additional opportunities. CLICK the links to learn more and/or donate:

San Antonio Food BankExternal Link is the donation management partner locally that is offering emergency management support to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Coordinated Response

Southern Region Director Ron Oats has designated Area Director Rob Hofmann as project lead for BSA’s response to this need. Please make sure to coordinate any efforts with the Alamo Area Council by emailing to share with Mr. Hofmann before moving forward to ensure we provide a coordinated response.
