Who is the Friendly Scout Park Manager at McGimsey?

When Pack 485 first decided to camp at McGimsey Scout Park, they were nervous. However, Scout Park Manager, Chris Silvey, assuaged their hesitations by ensuring the best possible camping experience through great customer service and professionalism learned from his personal experience as an Eagle Scout.

Silvey, a Dallas native and fishing aficionado, serves as the Scout Park Manger for McGimsey. He’s been involved with Scouting ever since he was little and earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2010. A lifelong lover of nature, his Eagle Scout service project was building walking platforms at the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary.

He says that one of the greatest skills he gained from Scouting was service to the customer, and he still utilizes that mind-set in his job today. When it came to Pack 485, the Cubmaster had expressed concerns about the tall grass in the park. Silvey personally ensured that the grass would be mowed. He also met with the Cubmaster and other parents upon arrival and detailed all of the activities they could partake in for the weekend.

Another benefit of Scouting, according to Silvey, was the ability to spend quality time with his father, saying “Scouting was a great bonding time for my dad and I because we did everything together. I see this father and son walking around the park that reminds me so much of my dad and I because they’re always together.” On one of his Scouting trips with his father, he was exposed to helping out a Campmaster in Dallas who would later inspire him to apply for the position of Scout Park Manager.

Silvey moved to San Antonio three years ago and volunteered through the United Way's Days of Caring with his mother at McGimsey Scout Park. The Director of Scouting Operations, Sean Magnuson, realized that Silvey was an Eagle Scout and they struck up a conversation.

"I noticed his work ethic at the volunteering event, and I told him about our need for a Scout Park Manager.  We are all glad he is part of our Scouting team!" recalls, Mr. Magnuson. Silvey recalled his weekend spent as a volunteer Campmaster and knew this job would be perfect.  He has been working at McGimsey Scout Park since April 2016.

A self-proclaimed busybody, he enjoys the physicality of the job that requires tasks like moving fallen trees and electrician work. That being said, he says his favorite part of his position is the interaction with people. “My favorite part of my job is talking to the people that come through the park; asking the parents what they do and sharing Scouting experiences with the kids,” details Silvey. This passion for both the outdoors and social interactions make Chris a great asset within the Council; well, that and his adorable dog, Maxi.
