Merit Badge Counselor 2017 Renewal

The renewal period for 2017 will be October 1, 2016, to December 15, 2016. No exceptions for late submissions. All MBC status expires on December 31, 2016 if renewal application is not completed.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, I want to thank you for your service to the young men of Scouting and the Alamo Area Council as a Merit Badge Counselor.  Without your help, advancement can only go so far and there would be no Eagle rank achieved

Merit Badge Counselor Renewal Process

  • If you were approved as a Merit Badge Counselor (MBC) prior to 2016 and you plan on staying on as a MBC you will need to complete the 2017 online renewal applicationExternal Link or visit http://www.alamoareabsa.org/MBC for more resources. You will need to provide a copy of your of completed Merit Badge Counselor Orientation, as well as any certifications that are required for badges that you are teaching. 
  • All approved MBC are required to complete YPT and  Merit Badge Counselor Orientation training.  For a list of training's please visit our Training Calendar.  If you are not sure if your YPT is current, please contact the Council Office to check on your status.
  • The renewal application will have three options: Add, Delete, Renew. In addition, you now have the option to teach at Merit Badge University or Winter Merit Badge Extravaganza (MBU). 

    Add:            Use this only to add badges for which you are not currently approved.  Full qualifications will be required.  This includes any certifications required by BSA for the particular badge.  (See “Special Requirements” document.)

    Delete:        Use this only for badges for which you were previously approved and want to remove from the list of approved badges.

    Renew:       Use this only to renew badges for which you were previously approved for and want to continue to teach.

    MBU:          Select this for any Merit Badge(s) you are approved as MBC for AND are willing to teach at a MBU or the Winter Merit Badge Extravaganza. 

    Please note that the website is only for the renewal process.  Newly applying MBC are required to submit an adult application, MBC application and a copy of YPT to the Council office.

    Incomplete applications for renewal (i.e., missing YPT, certification copies, etc.) will be considered late regardless of the actual date submitted, unless the missing information is submitted before the closing of the renewal window. Applicants missing information and/or paperwork will not be contacted until after ALL of the complete renewal applications have been processed.  So please be sure everything is complete at submission of your renewal.

    REMINDER:  There is no limit to the number badges for which one MBC can be approved.  However, due to form limitations, only eight can be renewed per form.  To renew more than eight badges, submit as many additional forms as required to renew all of the badges for which you were approved.

    Once your renewal has been approved you will receive an email from aac.adv.mb@gmail.com advising of your approval.  We suggest you add this email address to your contact list so that your renewal approval is not missed.

    The same email can be used for any questions regarding your application or submitting missing information/paperwork.  Please include your District and unit number when contacting with questions to expedite the response.

    New Merit Badge Counselor Application Process

    • Application for a new MBCs requires:
    1. All information required above (MBC application, YPT, Certifications); plus
    2. Fully completed BSA adult application.Even if you are registered in another position with the BSA, a separate BSA adult application is required for the position of Merit Badge Counselor.

    IMPORTANT NOTES: 

    • Any person serving as a counselor for a badge must be registered and approved as a MBC for that badge.
    • Registration as a unit leader does not grant MBC status.
    • Anyone assisting a Scout in the completion of an incomplete badge from other badge earning opportunities must be a registered MBC approved for that badge.
