New Merit Badge Counselor Renewal Yearly Process

The Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council is implementing a new yearly renewal process for all Merit Badge Counselors.

We want to begin by thank you for your service to the young men of Scouting and the Alamo Area Council as a Merit Badge Counselor.  Without your help, advancement can only go so far and there would be no Eagle rank achieved.

While administrative duties are necessary, I know they are not fun.  I want to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this memo and taking the necessary steps to improve our system.

Our current list of Merit Badge Counselors (MBC) in the Alamo Area Council contains many inactive counselors and incorrect information.  To identify the active counselors and update our system with current information, we need to follow the following process (please read both categories to see which one applies to you). We understand you may have lots of questions and concerns please feel free to email the Advancement Team at: MBC@alamoarebsa.org


Merit Badge Counselor Renewal Process

  • All existing/ active MBCs as of 12/1/2015 (except those qualifying for Exemption) will need to submit:
    1. New MBC application to renew their membership;
    2. Proof of a current Youth Protection Training; and
    3. Copies of any certifications necessary for specific badge(s) (see attached list).
  • Exemption.If you were approved as a new MBC or submitted a MBC application for add-on/deletions in 2015, you will automatically be renewed for 2016.
  • Deadline.Completed renewal submissions must be received by January 31, 2016.All applications received after that date will not be renewed and will have to reapply as a new MBC.

New Merit Badge Counselor Application Process

  • Application for a new MBCs requires:
  1. All information required above (MBC application, YPT, Certifications); plus
  2. Fully completed BSA adult application.Even if you are registered in another position with the BSA, a separate BSA adult application is required for the position of Merit Badge Counselor.

Current registrations for MBC will expire on December 31, 2015, but the renewal  period has been extended to January 31, 2016.
