My Experience as an Intern

When I first came across the marketing internship listing for Boy Scouts of America at Alamo Area Council, I figured why not apply; it was a paid position, and Boy Scouts is a well-respected organization. However, when I came in for my interview, staff member Chelsey started telling me about all the different programs and ranks and events and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. I didn’t know anything specific about Scouting and it seemed like I would never learn all of the lingo. However, for my interview, I also Facetimed with the Scout Executive, Michael De Los Santos. He asked me a lot of questions about why I wanted to work for Boy Scouts and then I asked him a question I ask all my potential employers: why should I work for your company. His answer not only sold me on the internship, but on Boy Scouts as a whole. He explained that there are a ton of reactive programs out there that help people who have fallen upon hard times. What makes Boy Scouts different is that is a proactive program. It impacts these kids when they’re young and gives them something to strive for early. Boy Scouts instills a moral code that will last kids for the rest of their lives. Needless to say, I took the job.

I’ve worked at traditional marketing agencies in the past and while I enjoyed that experience, I knew I wanted to work for a company that actually made a difference and Boy Scouts was the perfect fit. Now, everything I do has the overarching goal of improving the lives of young kids to make a difference in the community.  I know that every video I create, every photo I take, and every article I write, could be changing a kid’s life forever. While that may sound cheesy, I know that what I’m doing everyday might bring a new kid to Scouting and all that it has to offer them.

Coming in, I had only ever really worked with social media, creating internal social media audits and analyzing the engagement, with no previous experience in video or photo editing. However, with the help of my two mentors, Chelsey and Angel, I have had the opportunity to learn how to do all of that and more. Through this internship, I have recorded Project Aguila Scouts playing soccer at Mays Family Scout Ranch, photographed the excitement of winning the annual Scouting golf tournament, and written a story that moved a father to tears. All of these learning experiences have not only made me a better marketing professional, but also a better person. As Michael said, Scouting is something to strive for. Working at Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council has given me something to strive for, as well.
