Scout Eagle DJI Phantom 3, takes 1st Flight at McGimsey Scout Park

by Meredith Goshell for the Alamo Area BSA: August 27, 2016

During Boy Scout summer camp 2016 at Bear Creek Scout ReservationExternal Link, we made a fatal mistake.  Our marketing director, Angel Martinez, was out flying our DJI Phantom 2, capturing video footage of our interns as they rappelled from the Order of the Arrow Cliff when suddenly, he felt a strong wind in the air that felt all too familiar.

In the summer of 2015, he recalled the terrifying experience. “I was flying the quadcopter named 'Eagle Eye' near the Order of the Arrow fire ring and I lost control of it somehow, and I’m a pretty good pilot, but it crashed into the Order of the Arrow tree.”

The 'Eagle Eye' was recovered by a helpful staffer and continued telling Scouting's story from the sky.  This summer, Angel knew what was going on but couldn’t do anything to stop it.  He looked on in horror as he “was flying it over the Order of the Arrow (OA) water and - Wakanda - took it into the water!”

It was then that he realized, after remembering the word 'Wakanda' at an OA Four Winds ceremony, that he needed to get all things blessed by the great Spirit of Wakanda upon entering the Order of the Arrow space.

Using American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies for more than 100 years, the Order of the Arrow (OA) has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well. Arrowmen are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit; promoting year-round and long-term resident camping, developing leaders, and providing cheerful service to others. OA service, activities, adventures, and training for youth and adults represent models of quality leadership development and programming that enrich, support, and help to extend Scouting to America's youth.

The time has finally come for a new quadcopter to emerge.  On August 21, 2016, we purchased the DJI Phantom 3, who is fondly referred to as 'Scout Eagle'. The Phantom 3 captures up to 2.7 K Ultra HD video at 30fps and 12MP photos. The new remote controller allows a flying range of up to 3,280 feet, and will be used to help us promote our camps and Scouts.

This unit has default flight controls that can adjust the aircraft’s altitude, heading, and movement, and can fly both left to right and backward and forward. It also features an automatic landing mode that even Wakanda couldn’t interfere with. That being said, we’re still going to get this one blessed by Wakanda before we fly anywhere near the Order of the Arrow land at Bear Creek Scout Reservation so we don’t lose this Scout Eagle.
