Successful Scouting Expo Night 2017

By: Jorge A. Lucio for the Alamo Area Council, August 11, 2017

On August 3, 2017, the Alamo Area Council hosted its Annual Scouting EXPO at the Freeman Coliseum EXPO Hall, with more than 800 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturers, leaders and Volunteers in attendance. As you enter the doors, the EXPO features vendor tables that promote Scouting and 21 local business partnerships. Vendors for 2017 included: Alamo Tees & Advertising, Battle for Texas: The Experience, CarFest, Cave Without a Name, Fort Sam Houston Medical Museum, Incredible Pizza, Natural Bridge Caverns, Phillips Entertainment, San Antonio FC, San Antonio Missions, San Antonio River Walk Association, San Antonio SPURS, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, San Antonio Zoo, Scobee Education, Sea World Camp, Allstate, Tower of the Americas, USS Lexington, Whole Earth Provisions, and the 501st Troopers.

In addition to attending the event many vendors provided door prizes for pre-registered participants ranging from backpacks to tickets to various activities. Before the start of the EXPO, the Bear Creek Unit Appreciation Dinner took place where ScoutMasters, Committee Charis, and Senior Patrol Leaders enjoyed home-grilled burgers while learning what’s to come for 2018 Boy Scout Summer Camp. There was plenty of water, drinks, and snacks for the entire family! The EXPO was able to successfully promote the upcoming popcorn sale season by giving out free samples to all the attendees and recruited an additional 18 units for the 2017 popcorn sale.

One of the main draws to the event is the release of the Fall/Winter Adventure Guide that focuses on promoting future events that the Alamo Area Council hosts such as: Woodbadge/NYLT, Spook-O-Ree, Report to State, Leadership Training, Scouting for Food, etc. Additionally, the full color magazine includes contact information for all staff members as well as information on the three camping properties: McGimsey Scout Park, Bear Creek Scout Reservation, and Mays Family Scout Ranch. We encourage all Scouts in the San Antonio area to pick up a copy so they can be informed and up to date with events and activities. You can locate the newest Adventure Guide at

The final breakout of the evening provided many Volunteers and Scouts the ability to participate in a membership training presentation where they learned about useful tips for annual recharter and unit management. The Scouting EXPO night was able to properly spotlight all the exciting adventures the Alamo Area Council has to offer to the entire family!

We also want to give a special thank you to William Cantu who lead his team from All-State to donate $6,000 to the Alamo Area Council. This money will allow future events to be hosted. Not only did they donate this generous amount, but they also helped and volunteered with various activities throughout the evening.

Overall, the night was huge success with a huge turnout! We invite everybody to join us next year. To keep up to date with future activities or next year’s expo visit www.alamoareabsa.orgExternal Link.
