Scouting For Life: My Beginning to Professional Scouting

By: Stuart Cram, 2017 Spring Marketing Intern, January 20th, 2017

Growing up I began my scouting career at an early age at the age of five years old in the Tiger Cubs at Pack 66. I continued my scouting career and I went on to receive my Arrow of Light and crossing over from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts. I began as a member of Troop 66 and later moved to Troop 346 to receive the award of Eagle Scout in May of 2011. I always enjoyed the brotherhood and outdoor skills that the Scouting provided me and appreciated all of the people that organized it, so much so that I continued on to work for the National Boy Scouts of America at the High Adventure Base in the Florida Keys Sea Base, at the Brinton Environmental Center in the Summer of 2015. Now I am one of the people who organizes the scouting. I am currently the Spring Intern for the Boy Scouts of America Alamo Area Council. I am assisting Angel Martinez and Chelsey Schulze with their day to day work in the area of Marketing, we are primarily focusing on content marketing and public relations.

Working in Florida brought my perspective into the sense that it takes an incredulous amount of energy, and an eccentric outgoing person just to put on a whole week at a High Adventure Camp for a crew of scouts. Now I am beginning to see the way that that adventure impacted my life. I met incredible people and I learned the difference between an adventure and an ordeal is your attitude and since then I have begun to take things with an open mind and a blank slate to begin with and not being afraid to jump right into things.

So far I have seen that there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes in the preparation for all of the larger scale events such as Summer Camp, Scout Nights, and some of the other fun activities that scouting provides for the young men. The Alamo Area Council, as well as the world, has grown exponentially since my time as a scout. Currently I am working on preparations for some of the ask events as well as some of the other fund raisers. It is good to give back to the organization that molded me and I am anxious to see the growth that I can assist with as well as the growth I will see in myself and the Council.
