Another way to support your Scouts in the Scouting Program

by Pastor Gene Horne for the Alamo Area BSA: April 2016

It is the time of year that boys move from being Webelos to becoming Boy Scouts. These youth are very rapidly becoming young men. It is also the time when adult scouters move with their sons into a troop from their pack. However it is not every adult scouter who will serve in a troop position. I wish to suggest another way to support your young man in the scouting program. The District and Council in which you are located brings various programs for the scout individually and personally to participate in activities that will enhance the scouting experience for our young.

There are many opportunities for an adult scouter to serve the youth of the scouting program. There is always a need for an experienced scouter to serve in commissioner service. There is a need for scouters to serve on District committees: training, membership, camping, etc. The Council Cub Scout camping program is in need of cub leaders to serve at a camp experience for a first time cub scout. Your district freez-a-ee is looking for help to put on the program each year.

This list does not begin to cover all the opportunities for service. Not only are these opportunities helpful to the youth but also they give opportunities for an adult to enjoy the outdoors and the fellowship of scouters who have the same goals for their youngsters, as do you. Ask your district service person if they can use you. Find out what these opportunities are and what your service can mean to the scouting youth of our communities.
