Shoot Out to Support Boy Scouts

Valero Energy Foundation generates funding for Scouting adventure during Annual Sporting Clays event

SAN ANTONIO, May 24, 2017 – Locally based Valero Energy Foundation will continue its partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council (BSA), by serving as lead sponsor for the Boy Scout Shoot Out.  In its fifteenth year, the BSA sporting clays event is a fun-filled afternoon shooting competition held annually at the National Shooting Complex. This year’s event will be held Thursday, May 25, from 1:30-6:00 p.m. at the National Shooting Complex, 5931 Roft Road, San Antonio, TX 78253. Media is welcome to attend to watch Scouting supporters enjoying their own outdoor adventure in support of youth.

Special events such as the Boy Scout Shoot Out provide support for Scouting programs council wide.

"Scouting provides a solid foundation of learning for boys and young men everywhere, offering them the opportunity to experience the outdoors, build friendships and solidify the values that will stay with them throughout their adult lives", said Gary Simmons, Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council Board Member and SVP Supply, International Operations & Systems Optimization for Valero.  The Valero foundation is proud to partner with an organization that shares our passion for educational programs which prepare children to become successful adults and future community leaders. The Shoot Out is just one way we extend our support of the Boy Scouts mission."

The Alamo Area Council’s objective is to grow the number of youth and families served by the BSA, and provide access to Scouting programs to individuals and families regardless of financial need.  Scouting programs supported include Project Aguila, a board initiative to create long-standing Scouting units in new areas of need; and ScoutReach, an in-school program that serves more than 4,000 at-risk youths.

Last year’s sporting clays tournament drew 242 shooters and helped raise over $94,000.

“Scouting makes the most of what little time parents and San Antonio leaders have to impact their children. With support from charity events like our Boy Scout Shoot Out, and community partners like Valero Energy Foundation, Scouting continues to provide a safe, time–tested, values-based environment that gets youth outdoors,” said Michael de los Santos, Scout Executive for the local Boy Scouts.

The tournament will be held May 25th at the National Shooting Complex -- one of the premier shooting facilities in the world, spanning 671 acres in San Antonio’s hill country.  As the headquarters for the National Skeet Shooting Association and the National Sporting Clays Association, the complex hosts elite tournaments for both sports, including the World Skeet Championships and National Sporting Clays Championship.

The tournament officially begins at 2 p.m.  A dinner and live/silent auction events will run from 5 - 6 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony for the top teams.  For details or to register, visit www.BoyScoutShootout.orgExternal Link or email or contact Courtney Bukowski at 210-296-7623 or by email [Click for member's page]
