2015 Texas Hills Pinewood Derby Enjoyed by All!

by Darlene Karthauser, April 13, 2015

On Saturday, April 11, Cub Scouts and Leaders came together with their families to enjoy the 4th annual Texas Hills District Pinewood Derby held at The Salvation Army Kroc Center.  Cub Scouts were invited to build Pinewood Derby cars to race at the District Pinewood Derby that was open to all Cub Scouts in the Texas Hills District from Castroville and Hondo to Kerrville and Hunt.

Not only were Cub Scouts invited, but any boy of Cub Scout age was also invited to come to the event and build a car on the spot.  Supplies were made available by generous grants from the Kerrville Rotary Club.

Along with the races, displays by Troop 60 and Troop 111, summer camp registration, and other Scouting fun was made available to participants.  Troop 60, sponsored by First United Methodist Church of Kerrville, had a display of kayaks and tents found on a typical Scouting activity.  Troop 111 built a "monkey bridge" for the Cub Scouts to test their skills at walking across a rope bridge.  Cub Scout Day Camp Director Linda Marshall was prepared to take registrations for summer camp and was able to answer anyone's questions about Day Camp.

Many volunteers made this event possible.  David Rittenhouse's superb leadership, Molly Putnam's liaison with the The Kroc Center, Graystone cadets, and many others helped to make this event memorable for many young people.
