Texas Hills December Roundtable Recap

2013 December Roundtable - Webelos to Boy Scout Transition

Texas Hills Scout leaders braved the cold and icy conditions Thursday night to participate in valuable leader training on Webelos to Boy Scout Transition Ideas and tips on Fire Building. The Cub Scout leaders and Boy Scout leaders held a combined meeting in order to discuss the requirements for Webelos 2 as they work towards their Arrow of Light and what Boy Scout leaders can do to make a smoother transition from Webelos to Boy Scouts. There was a lively discussion between the leaders with the result of many great ideas surfacing for both groups.

Fire building is one of the Scout skills that draws young men into the Scouting program. There is an attraction that beckons to most of us that have that outdoor spirit. John Harrison gave a spell-binding presentation on the skill of fire building. He gave a brief history of fire building, displayed a variety of fire building materials, and demonstrated the different ways of starting a fire. John provided small fire starting kits for each participant composed of a piece of rope, charcloth, steel wool, flint, and some other things. Fire building holds a fascination for all of us, and John's presentation held us all enthralled.

The weather conditions played a part in the turn out for this roundtable, but each month leaders will learn a little more about providing a quality program to the young men in their units, so I hope to see more and more units represented at the roundtable training. There are 33 units in our district and only 7 were represented. Those of you who were there experienced a great opportunity for learning and fellowship.

Hope to see you again next month at the District Banquet on January 9!
