Venture Crew 1 Experiences a Renaissance

by Darlene Karthauser

Venturing is a program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women from 14 to 20 years of age.  Advisors for Venture Crew 1 have invited students from Schreiner University and area high schools to participate. The Venturing program offers young people many opportunities to discover adventures, to build leadership, to set and reach personal goals, and to offer service to the community.

On October 11, advisors met with 6 charter members of the reborn Crew 1 at Zion Lutheran Church.  Youth members decided on three initial officers:  Crew President, Vice President of Communications, and Treasurer.  After a rousing game of Geography, new members brainstormed ideas for each of the four components of the venturing proram and it became immediately evident that the focus of the Crew was ADVENTURE.

Crew members agreed that a monthly activity weekend instead of weekly meetings would fit the schedules of all the busy members.  Some members new to Scouting expressed a desire to learn more in preparation for a backpacking trip.  The members got to work on planning a basic skills weekend in November at Kerrville-Schreiner Park to be followed by a backpacking trip to Lost Maples State Natural Area in December.

Scouts and others interested in the Venturing Program and Crew 1 are invited to contact Darlene Karthauser (, John Harrison ([Click for member's page]), or Caleb Thomas ( for more information.
