NOV: Trainer's EDGE, This is How You Become a Trainer!

What is Trainer's EDGE?

The Trainer’s EDGE course is provides and develops the platform skills of a trainer. It is meant to supplement the practice offered through Wood Badge and National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) staff development, with a focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media.

Who should attend Trainer's EDGE?

All Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing Leaders involved in training at the Pack, Troop, Crew, District and Council levels.  It particularly benefits Scouters selected to be on Wood Badge staff and Pack trainers.  

So, attendees include, but are not limited to:

  • Cub Scout leader trainers
  • Cub Scout pack trainers
  • Boy Scout leader trainers
  • Varsity Scout leader trainers
  • Venturing trainers
  • Roundtable staff an commissioner trainers
  • District and council committee trainers
  • Wood Badge staff
  • National Youth Leadership Training staff

Why you need to attend?

This course is required for all trainers at the Unit, District, and Council level.  It is also mandatory for all trainers selected to be on a Wood Badge Staff, and will help Pack Trainers attain their knot as well as improves their training skills.  Primary emphasis is on how to be a more effective trainer by learning better presentation techniques and by creating better visuals to assist you in delivering your training message.

This course requires some advance preparation on your part. Please read below for instructions on what you will need to do to get prepared for class.


Please prepare a 10-12 minute presentation on a topic from any BSA material. Your presentation should allow you to demonstrate the skills of a trainer. You will receive constructive feedback on your presentation from the other participants.

Possible Topics: Advancement, Leave No Trace, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat,

Youth Protection, Health & Safety, any Merit Badges, Troop/Pack/Venturing Committee

Responsibilities, Scoutmaster Duties, Cubmaster Duties, Planning Activities, Senior Patrol

Leader Duties, Wood Badge, Cedar Badge, and many more that you would like to present.
