by Gene Horne for the Alamo Area BSA: November 2018
It is time to begin to think seriously about nominations for the class of 2018. Perhaps you are new to scouting and have never heard of the Silver Beaver Honor. It was established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is presented for distinguished service to young people within a BSA local council. It is the highest honor that a local council can give. It is according to the Council web site:
The Silver Beaver Award is the highest council recognition awarded to registered adults for distinguished service to youth, upon nomination by the Local Council to the National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America. The awards are bestowed at appropriate local functions. Silver Beaver Awards are presented on the basis of the number of units in a council.
The award is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by registered Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders, Venture Scouters, Varsity Scouters, District Level Scouters and Council Level Scouters within the territory under the jurisdiction of a local council.
The Council has on its web site the form for nominating a Scouter. See link below:
It would help the Council Silver Beaver Committee in its work if you would use the Council Silver Beaver Award form for your nomination that is on the Council’s web site. The form has a place for the labors of a scouter who is worthy of receiving the Silver Beaver Award. A letter of recommendation for the nominee is optional. However, if one is given please only put the nominees name on the letter once at the top of the letter.
All nominations will have the names, unit numbers and district names removed for the committee’s review sheet that will be used by the committee in the nomination process. This is not a popularity contest for some people may be well know because of their position another may have a position that is not well known and yet have given faithful service to youth over many years. The Award is given strictly on the basis of the services performed for the youth of Alamo Area Council.
