Harry “Quint” Bowers Selected as 2019 Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams Eagle Scout Project of the Year

Harry “Quint” Bowers, an Eagle Scout with Troop 119, recently received word that he will represent the Alamo Area Council as the recipient of the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams Award.

Harry, completed his Eagle Scout Project, Might Mitts: Hand warmers for Kids with Cancer in the Spring of 2019.   Bowers fundraised and facilitated the creation of over 400 Mighty Mitts to aid pediatric cancer patients, who suffer from neuropathy, a common side effect from chemotherapy.  He dedicated his project to a young man from his community that he had befriended named Waylon Malone, who lost his battle with Neuroblastoma on March 29, 2017.

The Mighty Mitts were donated to four local hospitals – University Health Pediatric Blood and Cancer Center (San Antonio), Christus Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, Methodist Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and Dell Children’s Blood and Cancer Center (Austin).

Harry is excited and honored to represent the River District and Alamo Area Council as his project is considered for future advancement.

Scouting in New Braunfels Continues!

Scouting Continues in the River District!

Many of our units are finding new ways to come together and continue their Scouting Journey. Scouts, BSA Troop 133 held their Virtual Meeting on Tuesday to begin their Camping Merit Badge.  They held their meeting via Facebook Live and were able to go over many of the requirements with over 50 viewers and no Scout Signs were needed! They will host a follow up meeting next tuesday to wrap up the lecture portion-this will really get them prepared for Summer Camp so that a lot of their newer Scouts will be able to complete the Camping Merit Badge this Summer. They also use Team Snap to stay connected to their unit, and to update the families on upcoming events.

Venturing Crew 133 held their meeting on Wednesday Via Zoom, going over the upcoming Venturing Fest and a great game of Photo Roullette!  They also use GroupMe to stay connected and communicate!

Oak Tree Units Finding Success Scouting at Home

After reaching out to the wonderful volunteer leaders of the Oak Tree District, here are some of the creative way they are making the best of our current ongoing “stay at home” situation to keep Scouting relevant and fun.

Sara, a Bear Den Leader from Pack 18 has put together BALOO The Builder kits for her Bear Cub Scouts to come pick up off her front porch.  They can then take the kit home and do the project at home. Once done they check in online or send a text with a picture. How cool is that!

Pack 60 in Kerrville kept it simple and just did a simple Facebook live Pack meeting on the Pack’s Facebook page. Keep it simple, make it fun!

Pack 109 took a page from Pack 60 and held their last Pack meeting online using Goggle Meets. The only “fun” problem was keeping the boys from not hitting the mute button and trying not to laugh at all the funny faces the Scouts kept making at each other.  Sometimes you just have to be silly!

The Webelos of Pack 102 in Boerne are taking advantage of all the resources the Council has to offer online. Way to take advantage of the resources that are all around you!

Back up in Kerrville, Pack 1205 will take advantage of ZOOM the online meeting app and hold their next Pack meeting online for free if they keep it under 40 minutes.  Way to go 1205!

The Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner for Oak Tree is working with the American Heart Association to try and set up an online CPR class for anyone who wants to participate. Once we can all meet face to face, she will set up a meeting to go through the final process of working with the actual CPR test mannequin.  I almost said CPR test dummy, but I did not want anyone to think I was talking about Ted their current DE.
