On March 24, 2020 the Alamo Area Council held its first online merit badge class for “Personal Management”. Fast-forward, exactly three months later, to look at what the Council has accomplished with its new online merit badge class platform. The results are nothing short of amazing!
Until June 1st, all online classes were offered free of charge to assist families who may be impacted during this worldwide crisis. And even now, the associated fee is very minimal at around $5 per class. Under the direction of Linda Dieguez, Director of Outdoor Adventures, the online merit badge class platform has gained popularity locally, nationally and across the world. Here is a quick look at what Linda and her extraordinary team of volunteers have accomplished in the first three months:
- 51 Volunteer Merit Badge Instructors
- 2,534 Participating Scouts
- 169 Online Classes Completed
- 115 Council’s Participated (from around the world)
When Capital Group and H-E-B heard about the council’s new online merit badge classes, they immediately wanted to help; each offering to fund $5,000, for a grand total of $10,000. The Alamo Area Council is thrilled to have received funding from the special Capital Group grant, created specifically to support the online merit badge classes. And to have received another $5,000 from H-E-B, in support of local COVID initiatives, was incredible! There are not enough words to express the Council’s gratitude, to both Capital Group and H-E-B, for supporting the online merit badge program!
The Council will continue to look for funding as it grows the online merit badge program. It is a program that is needed in the Greater San Antonio Area and across the nation.
