As I drove down NW Military Hwy and onto Wedgewood Drive on Saturday, November 7th, I was excited to see vehicles return to the front fields of McGimsey Scout Park, one of the premier camps of the Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council. In recent years, this park hosted boys and girls, 5-20 years of age, in positive character-building activity. Then, COVID-19 emerged and has provided a new lens through which to view how Scouting and youth leadership is delivered, and what is possible to achieve despite challenges. The parked cars this November meant Scouting adventure was afoot and most everyone would be more than happy to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
The orange and yellow hues of the setting sun to the west, cast long shadows as it peered through the larger hardwood trees that lined the back 40 acres of this beautiful Scouting property. Thanks to the support of Scouts BSA Troops and many volunteers, McGimsey Scout Park turned into a magical Haunted Forest from 6 to 10 p.m. The Spookoree 2020 event, sponsored by our friends at ALLSTATE insurance, was a scary good success. Over 120 cars paid only twenty dollars each to cautiously crawl through spooky attractions like the Hocus Pocus Cemetary, a Zombie Graveyard, Spooky Witches, and a Nightmare Before Christmas.
My Scouting spirit was happy to once again capture stories through photography and videos of Scouts enjoying adventure while sharing Good Turn scares with Scout supporters driving by!
Special thanks to Michael Adress and Troop 745B, Kimberly Vasquez and Troop 100B, Tim Corley and Troop 809, Russell Tolbert and Troop 471, Ann Specht and Troop 346G, Jeremy Trescott and Troop 38, Claudia Velazquez and Troop 903, Jim Causey and Troop 346B, and J.
