Last Saturday, the Alamo Area Council’s dedicated Commissioners met at Mays Family Scout Ranch to prep and plan for summer and fall. A host of topics covered included how to support unit leaders and the goals to bring the Adventure of Scouting to more youth in and around San Antonio through stronger Roundtables, and the kick of of the Council’s New Units Training & Support program, known as NUTS. The 34 Commissioners in attendance also received a challenge to recruit one new Commissioner between now and June 1.
If you’re wondering what a Commissioner is, you’re probably not alone.
The history of the Commissioner Corps is as rich as Scouting itself, with the original Commissioners being credited for the success of the program in the early days of the BSA. Today, these experienced men and women continue to uphold the Scout Oath and Law serving as Council Lay-leaders in the Scouting community. They work shoulder to shoulder with Scout Service Executives (District Executives) in our local community as liaisons between the local council and Scouting units. A handful of paid staff cannot possibly fulfill the needs of 7,500 volunteers and nearly 30,000 youth over 13 counties. This proves how important Commissioners are for a successful Scouting program. You’ll find these cheerful volunteers at every level of leadership; at community events, Roundtables, and even hanging out with the units they serve. Primarily, they help chartered organizations and unit leaders to achieve the aims of Scouting by using the methods of Scouting, but they’ll tell you it’s way more fun than that bland description sounds!
…and it all starts with a servants heart, and a love of Scouting.
If you’re already wondering if you have what it takes to join the Commissioner Corps, then you no doubt have the servant heart our Scouts need!
