I love Popcorn Season, and the fact that my unit can earn up to 40% in commission isn’t even one of my top 10. Each day I’ll share – in no particular order – one reason why I feel this way.
Popcorn teaches perseverance
There are a ton of quotes encouraging us to persevere and for good reason. Practicing perseverance is not easy, and often not the most enjoyable…at least not until it’s done
Different things motivate different people. My son happens to be motivated by Scouting activities, which is convenient because we like them too! As such, raising support through popcorn sales helps our family make that possible for him. Talking to my son about how many tubs of popcorn he needed to sell to pay his yearly Scout dues, Cub Scout Day Camp, and Camp Akela, seemed like a tall order. Especially when the tooth fairy only gives $2 a tooth, and my son doesn’t have any wiggly ones. At eight years old, he knows popcorn is the answer to his challenge, but not having a real understanding of a value of a dollar, the path ahead looks long. So, instead of focusing on the sales, I encouraged him to focus on taking opportunities to sell. “Every journey begins with a single step. In your case kiddo, it’s a tub of popcorn,” I told him.
“What if I don’t earn enough, mom?” he asked.
“Don’t worry about that, buddy. All I ask is that you don’t give up. Can you do that?”
If you read Reason #4 to Level Up with Popcorn, you already know about the list of his anticipated Scouting bills hanging on the refrigerator. This weekend, he raised support for his adventures and reached his first goal: Paying his National Scouting Dues.
I knew that smile on his face. “We made it already?” he gasped.
I took the list from the fridge and instructed him to write paid next to the first figure on the list.
“That feels good,” he said, smiling at his noted accomplishment. “Now, I’ve got to do this one.” He tapped the words Cub Scout Day Camp a few times and gave me a side-eye glance.
“You think you can do it?”
“I won’t if I give up.”
I just love to watch these lightbulb moments happen!
